Youth XV Open League Campaign with Hard-fought 33-17 Win Over Fairwater

With undefeated Fairwater as the opposition and Taff’s well as last season's Blues Region F Champions, it wasn't just local bragging writes up for grabs in this derby clash. Fairwater began strongly showing an early dominance of both territory and possession within the game’s opening spell but the Taff’s well defence held strong and Fairwater failed to capitalise.

Slick Opening Taff’s Score

With some good clearance kicks from half-backs Tom cattle and Deon Mota, Taff’s well managed to get some territory of their own deep inside the Fairwater half as the pack started winning penalties and last season's top scorer second-row Ethan ‘Tito’ Prescott was in commanding form. But it was the backs that were to shine as they finished off a silky move to put centre Josh Husband in under the sticks for outside-half Deon Mota to convert.

Try Apiece

The home side were now starting to get on top with some sustained territory which led to a pin-point cross-kick from Mota and a superb take and electrifying burst from wing Cory Scanlon to cross the whitewash under the posts for Mota to add a second conversion to put the score at 14-0. Fairwater started to rally and took advantage of a missed tackle to score a converted try of their own and show why they were unbeaten last season but unfortunately for them, a little over-zealousness was to cost them dear as a yellow card was brandished in the direction of their scrum-half just before half-time.

First half score:   Taff’s Well Youth 14 – 7 Fairwater Youth

                                     Second Half

The home side were immediately back on the offensive as they endeavoured to take advantage of the numbers; Taff’s Well scrum-half Tom Cattle doing well to charge down a kick and kick through and score a third try for his side under the posts – Mota adding the extras. Fairwater showed how much they missed their influential scrum-half as almost immediately on his return, they scored another try in the corner thanks to his strong running.

Tempers Flare

With no love lost and the score at 21-17, both sides were issued a yellow card after some altercations but the extra room was to prove more beneficial for the home side as centre Ben Welling ran strongly through the middle to produce a great solo effort and to score Taff’s Well’s fourth try. The 10-minute sojourn on the sideline seemed to do winger Scanlon the power of good as he finished off another well-worked move to put on the afterburners and score in the corner for Tom Cattle to convert this time and make the score 33-17.

Taff’s Close out Game

With the final whistle approaching, the home side showed a shrewd tactical side to their game as they adopted a clever and accurate kicking game to pin back Fairwater in the own half and force them to play from deep which Taff’s Well managed right to the end of a very competitive match – the return should be cracker!

Final Score:   Taff’s Well Youth XV 33 – 17 Fairwater Youth XV
