First in Wales Schools Rugby Initiative for Taff's Well

Around 170 5th & 6th year children from Fynnon Taf, Gwaelod-Y-Garth and Tongwynlais primary schools descended on Taff's Well Rugby Club to take to part in a 2nd schools rugby festival which is part of a unique partnership between Taff's Well RFC, the University of Wales and the schools themselves.

The scheme sees students going into the schools to coach rugby at different age groups over different school terms. 3rd-year degree rugby coaching student Ben Wood - who hails from Gloucester, combines playing for the Taff's Well 1st XV with basing his degree dissertation around the project organising up to ten 1st & 2nd-year students to coach the children in their school environment and running inter-school tag rugby games as part of multi-age festivals ran at the club.

Rugby development committee Chairman Dave Beese commented 'This is part of a long-term plan to enable under-resourced local schools to experience rugby coaching and the initial signs are very encouraging as Fynnon Taf Primary School has recently re-activated their school rugby team after an absence of many years. In conjunction with the schools, we hope to help develop the children in terms of health, fitness, awareness, teamwork, motor skills and self-confidence. If they want to take it further, they can join our Mini & Jnr section where they will learn to integrate into a team environment which plays regular games against other clubs'. Rugby for children is strictly regulated by the WRU with the physical contact aspect of the game coming in at age groups which are mentally and physically ready for it'.

The three schools have warmly embraced the initiative which is the only one of its kind in Wales with Tongwynlais Deputy Head Tracey Cleverdon commenting 'The rugby coaching sessions have enabled all the children in their development of basic rugby skills. Having specialist coaches has raised their confidence and made them want to have a 'go' at any sport but particularly rugby'.
