Taff’s Well sit proudly at the top of the table following their win against Cefn Coed on Saturday. It has been a perfect start to the season with five wins out of five ,and with five try bonus points along the way. The win against a good Cefn Coed side was achieved despite a number of injuries and it is a credit to those players brought into the side who have all played their part in helping to maintain the momentum and the results have been excellent. Despite a lot of rain the pitch held up well allowing both sides to play some attractive rugby but it was the home side who started the strongest, resulting in tries from Rhys Watkins and Shawn Evans. As half time approached Ross Lucas, who has been outstanding covering several positions in a re-vamped back line, went over for the third try to give Taff’s Well a 15-0 lead at the interval. Cefn Coed started brightly at the restart, and after mounting some sustained pressure scored their first try. Taff’s Well responded with a try from flanker Lewis Edwards for a 20-5 lead. Taff’s Well kept going forward but were caught on the break allowing the visitors to score their second try in the corner. That proved to be the last score of the game. Even allowing for a strong wind it was unusual that neither side managed to convert any of their kicks during the game leaving the six tries as the only scores. The coaching trio of head coach Axel Rees, and player coaches Rhys Watkins and Gavin Close, have galvanized the team into promotion contenders, and to their credit the players have responded in a very positive way.
Taff’s Well 1st XV travel to another form side on Saturday ,with a trip to Abercwmboi ,while the 2ndXV are at home in a pool game.
