Taffs battling for elusive first win

Rugby Round up 19 September

Taff's Well First and Second XV fought hard this past matchday but still await their first victories of the season.

Travelling away to Caerleon in the cup, Taff's Well First XV started brightly, keeping their hosts pinned back in their own half for most of the opening exchanges. It was somewhat against the run of play then when Caerleon took the lead with a well-taken try. Two more tries were to come in the first half, with Taff's captain Jon Barry responding with one of his own to take the half time score to 21-5. Despite two good Taffs tries in the second half from new second row Jon George and Ryan Smith, the hosts got three of their own, winning the Cup tie 39-19.

In their first game of this season, Josh Phillips' Taff's Well Seconds team proudly took to the Maes Gwyn turf in fine spirits against Clwb Rygbi Cymru Caerdydd (CRCC). And, in spite of their very new combinations and structure, they too started well against a well-drilled CRCC team. Taff's defended bravely and held CRCC at bay for a long period in the first half, until a well worked CRCC backs moves broke the stubborn defence. Taff's gamely tried to play some running rugby but it was the better trained and drilled side who scored all the first half points - a further three tries taking the half time score to 24-0. Taff's endeavour was rewarded early in the second half however, disrupting a CRCC lineout to score. That was the only time the home team crossed the whitewash however, and as the game wore on and legs tired, CRCC ran out handsome victors, 57-5. Unbowed, it was great to see the Seconds run out once more.

We go again next week -

24 September - First XV vs Caerphilly (home) - 14.30 kick off
