Match Report: Taffs Well RFC 27 - 19 Croesyceiliog RFC (October 5, 2024)
Taff's Well First XV secured a 27-19 victory over Croesyceiliog RFC in a closely contested first-round match of the WRU Men's National Division 2 Knockout Competition. The match saw Taff's Well take control with solid forward play and tactical kicking, while Croesyceiliog contributed with some expansive rugby that kept the game competitive throughout.
Veteran prop Gareth Gibbs rolled back the years, diving into the corner for a try after an excellent floated miss pass from Callum Wheeler. Wheeler, who had an outstanding game, not only set up this crucial try but also kept the scoreboard ticking over with precise kicking, ensuring Taffs Well remained in the lead.
Josh Walsh added another try for Taffs Well, rumbling over from close range after a period of sustained pressure from the pack. Despite Taffs Well's strong forward dominance, Croesyceiliog played an expansive style of rugby, moving the ball wide and creating opportunities, but they were ultimately unable to overcome Taffs Well's defensive resilience.
In a tough shout for man of the match, Gareth Gibbs was awarded the accolade for his try-scoring efforts and strong presence on the field. Special mentions go to Corey Bushall, who worked tirelessly throughout the game, and Callum Wheeler, whose playmaking and kicking were key to the victory.
This well-rounded team performance sets a strong foundation for the Firsts as they head into their league clash against Ynysybwl RFC next weekend, while also providing momentum for their continued progress in the knockout competition.
We wish Croesyceiliog all the best for the rest of the season!
Elsewhere, the Second XV continued their entertaining start to the season, playing a huge part in a massive 14-try thriller against Llandaff North RFC 2nds but ultimately falling short in a 48-36 defeat at Hailey Park.
